Early Morning Scene

Naomi is our early riser and most mornings she wakes up long before her sisters. I took this photo of Ed & Naomi a few weeks ago, thinking how perfectly it captured this piece of our family life. Ed and I are often up early and working away in our office and most mornings Naomi joins us there.

Eve Tries out a Joke

One of Ed's favorite ways to tease the girls is to talk about them doing silly things or acting nonsensical. For example if Naomi doesn't want to eat her peas Ed will say something like "Did you want to eat old shoes? No? Hm. Did you want to eat a rubber band? No?" Usually this gets Eve & Naomi both giggling and Joanna sometimes because she sees her sisters laughing.

A few weeks back on a sunny day we had this conversation as I was preparing dinner.

Eve: "Mom, can we eat on the deck?"
Katie: "Uh . . . (deciding)"
Ed: "No, silly, we can't eat on the deck. We eat on Plates!" Usually Eve will humor her dad and make an exasperated noise or smile and shake her head, but not on this day.
Eve: "No, Dad. We don't sit on plates . . . (glances at me with some question on her face) . . . We don't sit on plates to Eat Dinner!"

She seemed very proud of herself despite her earlier hesitancy so I looked at Ed and said, "I think she just made a joke." And he was laughing and congratulated Eve on her good joke. It was the first time the girls had turned his own game around on him and we thought Eve did pretty well for her first attempt.

Joanna & Phoebe sleep!

A big Praise! Joanna is already used to Phoebe's noises and can sleep through her midnight wails. Even better, Phoebe will sleep through Joanna's "going to bed" protests. Yay for just one awake kiddo at feeding times!

Naomi's Fruit Beer

We enjoyed some root beer during family movie night a few days ago. Naomi very politely said "No, Thank You" when we were pouring everyone a glass.

After some time had passed she noticed everyone else drinking root beer and (again very politely) asked, "May I please have some black fruit smoothie?"

Ed, choking on his drink, said "Uh, do you mean you'd like some root beer?"

Naomi said, "Yes, I'd like some Fruit Beer, please."

Just cracked us up, so I thought I'd share it here.

Wish List

Ed and I have been busy organizing the office. This has involved sorting through mountains of paper and filing, throwing out, or dealing with each scrap.

I have come across several scraps that include list of various wants/needs for all of us so I am posting a combined list here ("dealing with" these bits of paper) and then I will toss them out!

Phoebe: Newborn diapers - she is smaller than we expected! We have plenty of size 1 diapers, but could do with a package or two of newborn size (under 8 pounds). Large Bibs - Joanna has destroyed most of what we had so we'll need a few more in a few months.

Joanna: Nothing on the lists

Naomi: Tops with characters on them - she prefers a picture of something like Hello Kitty or a princess or fairies. Craft Activities/Supplies - sticker books, paint with water books, see-through paper for tracing, construction paper, glitter pens, O-glue, jewelry kits.

Eve: Croc charms - these are little decorative pegs that stick into Croc shoes. Checkers - board game. Craft Activities/Supplies - paint by number, washable paint, beading kits, any color-it-yourself kits, O-glue, construction paper, glitter pens.

All the girls: Educational Software - Ed just got the girls' dinosaur desktop sound working so they have been enjoying our very few 'games.' We would love some educational software, like Edmark, for our home computer. Leapfrog Learning DVDS - these include Letter Factory, Math Circus, Talking Words Factory, Storybook Factory, etc. The girls love these. The Singing Bible - this is by Focus on the Family and has been recommended to us several times and it sounds wonderful. Adventures in Odyssey - These are also by Focus on the Family and we love to listen to these (borrowed from the library) on car trips. Signing Time DVDs - We enjoy these as a family and get them regularly from the library. We'd love our own copies, though, so we can watch them more often and use them as part of our homeschool curriculum.

Katie: A food dehydrator - for preserving. A laminator - to laminate 8.5" x 11" pages. Subscription to Zion's Fire - a Christian magazine.

Ed: Can't usually think of anything on the spot.

Phoebe's First Shower

Before church yesterday Phoebe had a shower with mom. We had to use her giraffe bathrobe, of course, and she looked so adorable in it we had to take a picture.

Phoebe Goes to Church

Ed and I decided to give church a try this morning. The older girls are all out of town with Grandma, so it was just Phoebe and us.

Phoebe slept the entire service and we had lots of folks excited to see her.

Phoebe Zeruiah Price - the name game

So I think it was when Katie and I were married and for the first time were talking about names for our first child Eve, that I mentioned it would be nice if one of each of our children's names would be a Bible name. And Katie responded, "Why not make both first and middle names Bible names?"

I thought, "Even better," and that got us on a limited but very fun path of picking names (made even more fun and creative when we kept getting girls). This is where the names have led us thus far...

Eve Hadassah Price
Naomi Priscilla Price
Joanna Jael Price
Phoebe Zeruiah Price

We basically tried to use first names that weren't common but were recognizable as names. For middle names, we tried to use cool names that we liked but wouldn't be quite as common or normal if we used them for first names.

Interestingly, that has led us to a nice mix between Hebrew and Greek names (with a British last name). I think Phoebe is the biggest mix with a very obvious Greek first name and a very obvious Hebrew middle name.

Phoebe means "bright, shining sun;" it has the same root as Apollo and Phoenix. As a person, Phoebe was a deaconess, carried Paul's letter to the Romans (the book of Romans), and she financially supported Paul and many other Christians; (Romans 16:1-2). On the list of baby names of 2009, she ranked #325 (this tells us about how many other Phoebe's she'll run into).

Zeruiah means "balm of God" (a sweet and soothing fragrance of God). She was David's sister and the mother of three of David's leading heroes/mighty men/generals: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. We pronounce Zeruiah as Zeh-roo-yah, but I believe it is also pronounced as Zerrah-Iyah.

More Phoebe pictures are coming. Thanks!

Announcing the birth of Phoebe

Announcing the arrival of our fourth, fabulous, female offspring, Phoebe!

Phoebe Zeruiah Price arrived this morning, 9/8/10, at 8:44 AM at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland.

She was 7 pounds, 8 ounces and 20 inches long. She has a lot of dark brown hair (but we think it will lighten up).

Katie and Phoebe are healthy. Phoebe is a great baby and is easy to calm down.

Thanks for your prayers!
